the rookwood

if you're hungry in cincinnati, you might want to visit this historic
 restaurant.  welcome to the rookwood.
born into the wealthy longworth family in 1849, maria longworth began her art career painting porcelain for her home.  her father encouraged her art, and offered her an old schoolhouse he had bought at a sheriff's sale.  rookwood pottery was born.
maria's business was one of the first businesses to be owned and operated by a woman.
the original kilns are still here, and now you can have a salad or a burger,
look at some beautiful pottery, and even
have nutella gelato or chocolate mousse for dessert.
inside this kiln is a table for six, and a
 photo.

this kiln is a lounging area
with a low table and velvet pillows.
the kiln's light fixture hangs under the chimney.

i recommend the salad with apples, goat cheese, and nuts, burgers, and the rye bread with herb butter.

maria longworth's work was exhibited at the 1876 centennial exhibition in philadelphia.  the artist attended and was captivated by the ceramics on display from japan.  look for a piece of rookwood pottery's asian inspired art here soon.

edible and artistic beauty.
joy to you!

  4. What a great place, Noreen! The first operated by a woman? How awesome! I'd go even if they didn't have Nutella gelatos! ;)
