chagall's windows

chagall went to chicago in the early 1970s to work.  while there, he offered to make the art institute a series of stained glass windows to be dedicated for america's bicentennial in 1976.
these room-sized works celebrate our country's religious and cultural freedom.
they detail the arts - music, literature,
 dance,
 painting and theater.
chagall also dedicated these works to chicago's then-mayor, richard daley, a great supporter of public art projects.

you can read more about them here.
the effect, when you walk out of the construction zone at the art institute right now, is surprising and wonderful.  really large and bright, they make you want to pull up a chair and just enjoy.
colorful beauty.

  3. These are great! I had no idea that Chagall ever worked in stained glass, but now that I do it seems so obvious that his work would translate well in that medium.
