the two towers

last year when my son wanted to read the lord of the rings, we decided to read the series together.  he began the fellowship of the ring, the first book.  i began the two towers, the second.  it was very interesting to start with the second book in a trilogy!  learning the characters on the fly, i loved the rich, full world the author created.  i got lost in the words.  tolkien (1892-1973) was an oxford scholar of old and middle english.  his text had depth and his descriptions were detailed and clear.  beautiful.

we're reading the series again, and enjoying it just as much.  i highly recommend starting with this book if you are a daring reader.  more information about tolkien is here.  any thoughts?  happy weekend, and may you find time for an engrossing story.

  1. I love this series too. My husband and I grew up on C.S. Lewis' and Tolkiens amazing worlds, and we are SO glad that our children are enjoying them too.

As you said the detail is amazing! I don't know if I know that much about my *real* life!

Hope you have a great weekend - it's cold here... the season for good, loooong novels.

  4. Hello! It is very fun when the children like the same books as the grown-ups! In our case, I hated "The Hobbit" from a mandatory reading in high school, so when my son wanted to read the series, I decided to give it a chance. The books are so dense, we had lots of conversations about them. Enjoy!

  5. Hi Noreen, LOR is my FAVORITE! I was so excited when my daughter was ready to read it and we did the same thing and read it together. Great conversations came from that and still do. x, Beth
