top 5 - the guernsey literary and potato peel pie society

hello!  this story is set between january and september of 1946, and told entirely through letters and journals.  

here's the top 5 things about this book:

5.  it educates about the second world war without getting to the point where you cannot read it anymore.  in addition, it shows the way daily life went on in london and the islands, when people were working around food restrictions and other wartime necessities.

4.  the letter format gives many points of view on the action, and drives the story forward in a surprising way.  the voices are distinct and clear.

3.  the  main character, juliet ashton, is a successful writer.  her book tour causes many of the letters.  She comes in contact with the guernsey literary society because a pig farmer there acquired a book that had been owned by juliet.

2.  it's funny, and the islanders really enjoy and support each other.  

1.  character wins.  happy ending.  

a quick read, and great for book groups - i'm hosting on wednesday.
