nanny/street photographer

vivian maier was a nanny, never married, with no children of her own.  she took up photography around 1950 yet shared her work with no one.  she had no photographic training or support.
vivian took pictures in chicago and new york.
her negatives were auctioned after her death, and a chicago historian purchased them and championed her work.
virtually unknown before, and cared for in her old age by the children she looked after when they were young, maier now has a website and exhibitions.  the book, vivian maier, street photographer is filled with interesting pictures, including a few of the artist.  a bittersweet beauty.

  1. I love her stuff. There's a poignancy to it, knowing her story, isn't there. Should probably put that book on my wish list.

  2. Wow, from just the few selected shots you show above, the book looks really beautiful. All the more so now that you've given us a little of her back story. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Whoa, I will look into getting that book! I adore how she sees. Captures of big city life thrill me anyway. There is always an edginess to it. And the fact that they are in black and white, and from an earlier time, just adds to it all. Thanks for this one Noreen.
